Technologies' flash-OFDM proprietary technology is to be used for
the first time in a commercial network following the Government of
Finland's award of an operating licence for the technology.
The licence was
granted to Digita Oy to build a mobile communications network
operating in the 450MHz frequency band which will primarily provide
broadband coverage in remote areas. The network will have to be
open for other operators to use.
"This is a
significant milestone for Flarion as it is the first commercial win
for its flash-OFDM technology," said Julien Grivolas, analyst at
Ovum.
Grivolas said the
technology has been tested worldwide, including by Nextel in the
US, T-Mobile in the Netherlands and Vodafone in Japan, but without
any resulting announcement. "The proprietary nature of the
technology seems to be too large an issue for the established
mobile operators."
Flash-OFDM (fast
low-latency access with seamless handoff orthogonal frequency
division multiplexing) is an air interface technology. It is based
on OFDM wireless access which combines TDMA and CDMA
technology.
